Job Title: Supervisory Forestry Technician Fire

Description:
Personally engages in fighting range, forest, and other wildland fires for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) as well as on fires for which cooperative agreements exit between the Service and outside entities, such as State, Federal, military, and local resource management organizations across the country. Prepares fire related reports and maps. Typically participates on numerous wildfires and prescribed burns annually for the purpose of creating firebreaks, combating woody plants, and stimulating the propagation of diverse grasses, forbes, and trees. Serves as crew chief on wildfires, determining potential for ground and air access, laying out and organizing lines of attack, accessing potential for backburning and use of fire trenches, and ensuring availability of equipment, water, and supplies needed to carry out wildfire suppression. Determines when refuge wildfires require auxiliary firefighting crews and aerial support; dispatches fire crews; and provides onsite direction and support to crew members on the fire line. Operates mobile firefighting equipment, e.g., tankers, backhoes, trenchers, fire boats, and engines (Driving a fire engine, tanker, or other vehicle with a gross weight of 26,000 pounds or more requires a commercial driver's license). Utilizes and maintains aerial fire ignition and suppression devices and equipment such as those using potassium permanganate pellets, gasoline gel caplets, terrain torches, and slurry buckets. Researches and orders specialized clothing, gear, spare parts, and equipment for fire-related activities. Provides basic fire suppression and fire control courses to firefighting personnel, including personnel from cooperating Federal organizations, and/or Native American groups sponsored by the Service; develops and directs field training exercises; and works with others to present basic and advanced fire fighting training.

In support of this mission, your duties will be to prepare conservation plans for a variety of land units including those with several agricultural enterprises or groups of conservation systems. Independently plan and oversee the installation of conservation cropping, rangeland, and/or irrigation systems. Work with integrated combinations of conservation practices. Modify designs for conservation practices within tolerance levels of NRCS standards and to meet changing needs or requirements.Explain available USDA program assistance and cost-share payment procedures to landowners. Advise landowners, developers, consultants, and local planning officials regarding land use changes to commercial, residential, recreational or educational uses on appropriate conservation methods such as erosion and sediment control. Advise cooperators on the need to secure land rights/easements. Gather and record complete planning data (including soil limitations, erosion surface, drainage and sedimentation) for conservation plans on farms, ranches, and individual land units. Conduct field surveys to include operating survey equipment, taking field notes, and preparing data sheets. Interpret local soil survey information regarding limitations and capabilities for a wide range of land uses. Follow established policies and procedures in collecting and recording information for conservation plan maps.Develop schedules for the installation of conservation practices based on plans prepared by incumbent or other NRCS personnel. Provide on-site assistance for the implementation of conservation systems on irrigated and non- irrigated cropland and rangeland. As needed, develops and provides training on field office planning practices and procedures to other technicians, conservation planners, engineering personnel and others. Participate in the preparation of the business plans and implementation, and prepare various accomplishment reports on areas of responsibility.Attend Soil and Water Conservation District board meetings as directed, and provides technical information and data on such topics as engineering projects, workload scheduling and project status reports.Participate in quality control assignments in areas such as program appraisals and trouble shooting problem situations.
