A Lead Engine Wildland Firefighter(GS-06 Range/Forestry Tech) Serves as a lead wildland firefighter performing the following duties: locates fireline, directs and participates in fireline construction, backfiring and burnout operations, engine operations, tree falling and holding/patrol mop-up operations.  Serves as a lead wildland firefighter on a wildland fire engine.  Drives and operates a wildland fire engine, positioning the engine for proper use and peration. Personally performs and directs others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustment in effective use of water and additives. Assures that needed tools and equipment are available for fire fighting tasks. In addition to performing all of the above duties, provides daily leadership and training for the crew members. Serves as a working leader. May also lead additional technicians and detailers. Instructs crew members in specific tasks and techniques; conducts on-the-job training; distributes and controls work assignments among employees, assures timely accomplishment of assigned tasks; maintains work notes and records; reports on work accomplishments, ensures that the work is carried out safely; reports on performance problems and issues. Responsible for supervision of the crew in the absence of the supervisor.

Specialized experience is experience which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: The experience requirements for the GS-8 level may be met by completion of 18 months of graduate level education in a position-related field of forestry or natural resources management. COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements. Grade 09: Qualifying experience for the GS-9 level includes one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-8. Specialized experience is experience which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION Specialized experience is further defined as:GS-8 - Developed schedules and work plans for monitoring and inspecting timber sales. Inspected timber sale areas for compliance with contract clauses governing location and construction of nonsystem roads, fire prevention, personal safety precautions, and cutting provisions. Monitored timber sale operations with conventional contract requirements and conditions. Assisted in performing final inspections, writing inspection reports, and recommending timber sale closure. Prepared charts, graphs, and/or reports for presentation based on review and compilation of timber-related program data. Applied practical technical methods and procedures to a wide variety of limited timber sale administration projects.GS-9 - Explained timber sales regulations, and contract provisions to prospective purchasers and logging operators. Completed timber-related work assignments, such as performing final inspections and recommending acceptance of sales contracts for closure. Reported on results of complex forestry-related testing procedures, and recorded new procedures for use by lower-level technicians. Performed continuous sale inspections, ensuring that contractor operations were appropriate and that land features were protected.
