Duties consist of working directly with forest and district hydrologists and Fisheries Biologists in determining the hydrological function of existing terrain and road features to minimize transported sedimentation impacts to streams form constructed road prisms that will be placed in long-term storage and impacts created by road decommissioning and recontouring activities. Monitoring turbidity levels in streams and local knowledge of hourly, daily and weekly forecated and actual rain events and how it will affect stream capacities and function will be required. A Fire Lookout(GS-04 Forestry Technician) This position is in the Division of Resources and Fire Management of the North Cascades National Park Complex. The incumbent is responsible for the detection, mapping and reporting of fires visible from the Desolation Lookout. The incumbent is required to hike an approximate 6 miles of trails with a rise of approximately 4,400 feet in order to reach the Desolation Mountain Lookout. Incumbent will work a 10 day schedule at the Lookout with 4 days off. The incumbent observes and reports specific smoke sightings and relays specific information of those sightings to the Park's Fire office via radio by utilizing and applying various specialized practices, tools and equipment. The incumbent is responsible for observing and documenting all fire weather and conditions data. Will be responsible for maintaining radio communications with other lookout stations, the Park Fire Dispatch office by operating multi-channel portable and base radios. Will serve as the primary contact at the lookout, visited by park visitors during the fire season. Promotes the Park fire prevention program by explaining state and federal laws, regulations and policies. Performs basic repairs to the lookout. Getting to the Lookout requires a 45 min. drive on Hwy 20, a 30 minute boat ride to the trailhead and the hike to the lookout is approx. 6 miles with a 4,400 foot elevation gain.
