The Research Assistant will assist the Research Associate in the day-to-day seed drying, fumigation, and shipping activities. This position will coordinate with project and operations leaders to assure availability dryer and fumigation capacity throughout the year and to manage the drying and fumigating processes of project material. Record moisture sample data and communicate data daily to team leader. Keep record of seed moisture when needed. Provide training for moisture sample recording for temporary workers. Work with Team Leader to manage dryer temperature and airflow settings to ensure timely drying and seed quality is preserved. Maintain cleanliness of dryer building and fumigation area. Vacuum out dryer bins as needed.Handles seed fumigation process: Maintain State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture Certification for Private Applicators of Restricted Pesticides Certification to include Agriculture Fumigation (Cat. 2). Maintain Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) qualification and SCBA equipment.Maintains Respirator qualification and respirator equipment. Research Assistant, Virology (#241-247)Provides technical and research support to the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) by enhancing bioforensic BSL-3/4 virology capabilities for the National Bioforensic Analysis Center (NBFAC) and the National Biothreat Characterization Center (NBTCC). Propagates, and ensures viability of a variety of BSL2/3/4 viruses in vitro, in ovo, and in vivo, propagation of cells in culture, reagent preparation, analysis of client samples to identify and characterize of viruses from complex environment and clinical samples, standard microscopy, basic molecular biology such as cloning and expression of viral genetic elements into plasmids, transformation, transfection, and work with viral vectors. Cross-trains other technical staff on virology protocols and procedures. Works in collaboration with scientists to develop, manage, and analyze research critical to the mission of the NBACC. Assists in developing protocols, maintaining records, analyzing technical and programmatic data and writing of analytical reports for Principal Investigators (PIs) and /or Laboratory Managers. Participates in the review of prior and on-going studies and analysis of information derived from those studies. Presents research results in written and oral formats to various internal and external audiences. Performs work with standard and select agents in BSL-2, -3 and -4 laboratories after appropriate training. Assists with incoming and outgoing shipments of biological materials and infectious agents that require appropriate Centers for Disease Control (CDC), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Department of Commerce (DOD) import and transport permits and licenses. Maintains a safe work environment by participating in specialized training and review of safety manuals and SOPs. Completes assigned training programs and adheres to all documented laboratory procedures and ISO 17025 and 9001requirements, as applicable. Identifies departures from the quality management system (QMS) and initiates actions to investigate and prevent such occurrences. Participates in the NBACC on-call roster on a rotating basis with occasional evening and weekend duties. Performs other assigned duties.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: BS degree and two or more years of experience (or equivalent) preferably in virology or a related field. Working knowledge of methodologies for growth, quantification, and identification of viruses required. Working knowledge of basic molecular biology methodologies desired. Proficiency and clarity in both written and oral communications essential. Exemplary organizational skills with a proven track record of working independently and as a team player. Knowledge or experience with biocontainment facilities and procedures, laboratory safety, biosurety, and decontamination highly desirable. Knowledge or experience with Quality Assurance (QA) programs such as ISO 9001 or ISO 17025 and/or GMP/GLP work environments desirable. Must be a citizen of the United States, able to obtain an interim secret clearance leading to a Top Secret (TS) clearance, DHS suitability, a favorable adjudication of the Department of Justice (DOJ) for select agent access, and enrollment in the Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP).
