THE JOB: OMNITRANS, provider of public mass transit for the San Bernardino Valley in Southern California is seeking a highly skilled professional to join our award winning team. We are looking for an accomplished individual who can work effectively in a highly collaborative team setting and be a self-starter to perform specialized professional responsibilities related to the Agency’s occupational safety, health, and environmental compliance program. This position also holds the responsibility for safety training and evaluation, control of hazards, emergency planning and response programs as well as occasionally assisting the Agency’s Ergonomic Evaluator/Specialist instructing participants in prevention of repetitive stress injuries, documents findings, and provides followup evaluations as necessary to increase participant's awareness and ownership of his/her work habits.

The duties may include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Investigates complaints or incidents related to employee safety, health, or the environment. Analyzes events and provides solutions. Cooperatively assists departments with internal investigation activities. Devises and recommends appropriate methods for worker protection. Develops and/or conducts employee training and programs in the areas of safety, health, environmental or emergency response/disaster preparedness. Develops safe work practice recommendations and provides training to prevent occupational injuries or illness. Monitors programs to ensure employee safety, health, and environmental compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Conducts inspections/audits of the work environment, activities, and processes to detect existing or potential accidents, fire, and health, chemical, biological, and physical hazards; cooperatively assists departments in identifying solutions to safety, health, and environmental concerns, recommends and ensures corrective action is implemented. Conducts work station evaluations in the office and field based environments for employees to mitigate risks through modification of the workstation or behaviors.
  • Acts as in-house consultant on safety, health, and environmental compliance issues; assists other departments by providing research and information as required.
  • Reviews, revises, maintain, and/or develop manuals and procedures related to safety, health, or environmental compliance; compile information to produce standard and special procedures and/or reports.

THE REQUIREMENTS: The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field is required and a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in an environmental and occupational health/safety industry managing specific regulations regarding air, water and soil, identifying problem areas and recommending solutions, inspecting workplaces for adherence to regulations on safety, health, and the environment. OSHA 30 hour in General Industry Certification, HazWoper 40 hour Certification, and DOT/RCRA Certification is highly desirable. Public Transit employment highly desirable. The Candidate must also have the knowledge of common industrial safety, health, and environmental practices; Cal/OSHA, NIOSI-1, SCAQMD, RCRA, SARA, and SEMS; California Code of Regulations Titles 8.13, 17, 19, 22, 23, 26, Uniform Fire Codes, Life Safety Codes, Uniform Building Codes, rules regulations, and procedures; public transit fleet operations, motor vehicle design and maintenance; federal, state, and local public transportation regulations. The employee assigned to this classification is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms; occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell; lift and/or move up to 10 lbs.; lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.; close ‘vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus; exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; vapors, fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration; noise level is usually loud.

THE SELECTION PROCESS: Candidates will be screened for relevant qualifying experience that consists of an evaluation of education and experience as described on the application. The most competitively qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the selection process. The selection process may include a combination of written, performance, and oral examinations. All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of both a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug test and an employment/criminal background investigation, which will include Life Scan fingerprinting.
