at SIU Medicine in Springfield, Illinois, United States Job Description Description Employees in this classification plan, develop, and implement elements of safety, environmental or related compliance programs for Healthcare to fulfill regulatory requirements. They work under the administrative and technical direction of designated administrators and technical leaders. Examples of Duties 50% Reviews, develops and maintains regulatory-compliant safety and health policies and procedures, with a focus on healthcare; develops training for new and existing staff; develops presentations and associated materials and presents training sessions including, but not limited to, general safety, emergency response, hazardous materials (chemical/biological/pharmaceutical) management, bloodborne pathogen, etc. Assists with maintaining and analyzing records of SIU SOM regulatory compliance training. Reviews and revises SIU Healthcare clinical safety protocols and procedures as required by local, state and federal regulations, and agency guidelines. Assists with the review and revision of SIU School of Medicine protocols and procedures. 25% Conducts inspections of SIU Medicine buildings and clinical facilities for occupational health and safety violations, and proposes recommendations for corrective action. Assists with Safety & compliance audits at SIU SOM facilities. 5% Serves as a member of the institutional biosafety committee (IBC); serves as a liaison between the IBC and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and SIU Healthcare's Risk and Safety Committee to ensure faculty and staff compliance with established safety requirements. Member of the Campus Safety Subcommittee and Campus Violence Prevention Committee. Serves on the School's Incident Command Organization under the All Hazards Emergency Operations Plan. 5% Assists with the proper management and disposal of regulated and special waste materials generated by the School's clinics in accordance with applicable rules and regulations. 5% Coordinate annual fire safety drills in clinical spaces and clinic inspections. 5% Investigation and assessment of accident and illness producing hazards; responds to complaints and requests pertinent to the safety and welfare of employees, students and campus visitors. 5% Maintains liaison between SIU SOM and the Illinois Department of Labor, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Aviation Association, Department of Transportation, Illinois State Fire Marshal, Illinois Department of Public Health, Sangamon County Public Health, and the Springfield Fire Department to ensure compliance with fire, safety and health codes, standards and regulations. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications 1. Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, environmental health and safety, education, life science or a closely related healthcare field. 2. Three (3) years (36 months) of professional work experience in Environment of Care (EOC), healthcare facilities management, life safety, and/or hazardous waste. Recommended, but not required: 1. Master's degree in business, engineering, environmental health and safety, education, life science or a closely related healthcare field. 2. Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Life Safety Specialist (CLSS), or other related safety certification. NOTE: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.
