POSITION INFORMATION
Temporary, full-time, approximately mid-June to mid-September. The appointment may be extended for an additional period. Persons selected may be eligible for rehire in future years. Schedule may involve weekend work or performance of duties before or after “normal” working hours. More than one position may be filled from this posting.
RESPONSIBILIES INCLUDE:
As a Fisheries Technician crew member on the Tanada Creek Salmon Weir project, duties will include:
- assisting with weir installation, maintenance, and removal of the weir and associated parts
- maintaining in-river structures and equipment, photovoltaic power system, and video equipment (underwater camera and recording system)
- observing and documenting biological data from the review of video recordings and accurately recording data
- assuring that the data is entered into an electronic spreadsheet on a daily basis
- assuring the accuracy and validity of data entered by other crew members
- communicating work-related needs and problems that arise to supervisor in a timely manner
- provide information about the weir and weir data to visitors and guests
- following established safety procedures and maintaining a safe working environment
- accessing site via ATV/ORV
- work may also include sampling from boats and traveling by small fixed-wing aircraft
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Applicants are encouraged to include in their resumes information related to the following competencies.
- Ability to identify salmon and freshwater fish species of Alaska
- Ability to collect and record biological and environmental data
- Ability or experience working on in-river structures and equipment, photovoltaic power systems, or video recording systems
- Ability to walk long distances (up to 5 miles), work in isolated semi-remote locations for long periods of time, work in inclement weather, perform physical lifting of up to 50 pounds, and to work in and near fast-moving water
- Experience with ATVs/ORVs
- Ability to utilize DVR and associated computer programs to review video recordings and accurately log activity of biological species
- Ability to follow established safety guidelines and to recognize and adapt to potentially dangerous situations
- Ability to effectively communicate with others/Interpersonal skills.
Required:
18 years of age or older, Valid driver’s license, Preferred bachelor's degree in Fisheries biology or related field
