We are looking for an Environmental Scientist to join the UST Prevention section of the Underground Storage Tanks Division. In the UST Prevention team, youll work toward Journeyman-level experience while ensuring underground storage tank systems meet state and federal standards. Your inspections will help prevent contamination at facilities across the spectrumindustrial, commercial, public, and privateby verifying compliance in UST installation, repair, and closure.
A bachelors degree in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field; OR A masters degree or doctorate in an environmental, biological, atmospheric, chemical, health, nuclear or physical science field, an engineering field, a geography/geosciences field, a natural resources field, or in a statistics or quantitative methods field. The incumbent of this position will serve in (LDEQ), Office of Environmental Assessment (OEA), Underground Storage Tank Division (USTD). The incumbent of this position is responsible for managing and completing inspection activities of the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Prevention section of the USTD.
The incumbent of this position will strive to achieve Journeyman level environmental experience to ensure that owners and operators of UST located at industrial, commercial, private and publicly owned facilities are in compliance with applicable state and federal rules and regulations designed to prevent the release of contaminants from USTs into the environment. Activities include verifying regulatory compliance of UST system owners and operators with applicable regulations designed to assure proper UST installation, repair, closure, and the prevention of release of pollutants into the environment.
Work is performed in accordance with Department rules, regulations, policies, quality management plans, state and federal laws, and best professional judgment. Supervision will be received directly from the UST Prevention Supervisor. The incumbent's responsibilities include, but not limited to:
Coordinate and/or conduct independent facility inspections designed to verify the regulatory compliance of UST system owners/operators with applicable state and federal regulations governing design, installation, operation, maintenance, contingency planning, records maintenance, integrity testing, and permanent closure of UST systems. Preparation of written reports, correspondence, file reviews, enforcement actions, and various documents detailing field activities involving UST sites, related inspections, closures, installations, and repairs/upgrades, and UST related incidents. Routinely review and process contractor compliance documents as applicable.
Incumbent shall be responsible for ensuring that they are informed of and comply with the department's mission, goals, administrative policies and procedures. Be able to organize workload and set priorities. Ensure all work is performed timely through assignment of tasks and monitoring of work performed and work assigned. Balance ones workload while ensuring that the Section's goals are met.
Participate in the training of members of the regulated community, and provide technical assistance to owners/operators of UST systems in completing Departmental forms and interpretation of the UST regulations. Provide assistance to the public in obtaining compliance related to topics including, UST leak detection systems, corrosion control systems, spill/overfill prevention, inventory control & release detection, record keeping, release reporting, and other related subjects.
Represent the Department at meetings with the regulated community regarding any regulatory requirements for UST sites.
Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by management staff.

Compensation: This position offers a Special Entrance Rate (SER) listed below. This is the minimum compensation that may be offered. The job title and salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
- Environmental Scientist 1- $20.91 per hour
- Environmental Scientist 2- $22.38 per hour
- Environmental Scientist 3- $25.62 per hour
