About/Summary

As part of Facilities Operations and Development, Environmental Health, and Safety (EHS), assists the university community in providing and maintaining a safe and healthful work environment for students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors. Reporting to the Manager of Occupational Safety and Industrial Hygiene, this team member provides a high level of technical knowledge and support to the EHS compliance program/program staff and exemplifies the universitys shared values.

Job Description Details

The Industrial Hygienist position at Ohio State will collaborate with the EHS team and various university departments to ensure the industrial hygiene program supports our mission and culture of Be Safe Today and Remain a Buckeye Tomorrow. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading, developing, and maintaining occupational safety and industrial hygiene programs.
  • Ensuring necessary inspection and audit activities are completed and deficiencies are corrected.
  • Acting as a representative of Environmental Health and Safety in interactions with the campus community and external agencies as appropriate.
  • Collects and analyzes highly technical data to ensure employee safety and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the department's industrial hygiene equipment, encompassing calibration, maintenance, and inventory control. Leads cross-training initiatives for less experienced EHS professionals on the proper use of equipment and accurate interpretation of sampling data.
  • Utilizes advance knowledge and education in the industrial hygiene/safety field to implement comprehensive safety and health programs, ensure regulatory compliance, and apply best practices in hazard management, leveraging the highest standards of expertise and professional credibility in the field.
  • Conducts hazard assessments/consultations in diverse working environments to successfully mitigate hazards using the Hierarchy of Controls. This involves applying advanced knowledge and technical expertise and understanding of the work processes, materials used, and potential sources of exposure or injury. Utilizes distinct sampling and monitoring techniques, compares exposure levels to regulatory limits, selects appropriate control methods, and ensures that control measures are properly implemented and maintained.
  • Develops complex safety programs such as the Nanoparticle Safety and a job hazard analysis program.
  • Applies regulatory updates to Ohio States health and safety programs. Ensures that emerging insights and directives from regulatory bodies are systematically integrated into the EHS framework.
  • Evaluates advancements in Occupational Health and Safety by conducting benchmarking studies, literature reviews, developing metrics, and standard interpretations to determine best practices.
  • Oversees comprehensive industrial hygiene sampling of employees. Responsible for identifying risk, interpreting results, and collaborating with departments to implement effective control measures to prevent overexposures.
  • Develops custom sampling plans for exposures not measured by standard passive sampling methods (such as badges). Researches and applies published analytical methods and collaborates with working groups to develop sampling strategies that accurately quantify specific contaminants.
  • Leads the multidisciplinary EHS Response Team, including the development of response protocols, monitoring of large-scale events, and coordination of response team training.
  • Administers Ohio States Good Catch program. This includes conducting near-miss investigations and recommending and implementing corrective actions.
  • Actively participates in safety-related continuing education and professional development, including presenting as a subject matter expert at applicable conferences.
  • Other administrative duties, as needed, including records management, auditing, and reporting as required by federal, state, and local regulations and university policies.
  • Oversees the creation of content for online safety training programs and ensures timely updates are applied.

Physical demands, working conditions and medical surveillance

  • Participate in the Environmental Health and Safety Emergency Response Team, including potential 24-hour emergency calls.
  • Requires participation in medical surveillance program, including clearance for respiratory protection (within six months of employment) for N95, negative pressure half-face and full-face respirator.
  • Capable of wearing a work uniform including steel toe shoes/boots; eye, face, and hand protection; and other protective equipment or clothing as required.
  • Work in physically demanding conditions, including exposure to seasonal weather changes and hazardous materials.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree and 6 years of relevant experience in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced understanding of federal, state, local, and applicable rules and regulations as it relates to safety and health.
  • Experience preparing technical reports and professional correspondence, including the ability to draft, edit, and produce a variety of documents such as: complex data analysis, training manuals, and compliance reports.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills. Valid driver's license. Successful completion of background investigation and continued compliance with applicable security plans.

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Occupational Health/Industrial Hygiene or related field.
  • 8-12 years of relevant experience
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
