Job Summary

Plan, organize, direct, and control all environmental, health, safety, and security activities to maintain and assure compliance with corporate, group, and location policies and regulatory laws.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe working environment. Understand, follow, and support company policies and procedures (e.g., lockout/tagout, hot work, confined space entry, etc.), as well as corporate and local safety initiatives. Assume responsibility for risk assessment. Manage and encourage all employees and contractors to be proactive in the area of safety, including anticipating unsafe behaviors, conditions, and unusual circumstances.
  • Develop, implement, and administer programs for plant safety, health, and environmental protection.
  • Monitor the site's compliance with all applicable federal, state, and municipal laws and regulations, as well as proper company policies in the areas of environment, safety, and industrial health.
  • Control and administer the management and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste. Recommend methods to reduce the quantity of waste generated.
  • Develop, administer, and train employees in spill prevention and control, stormwater management, and emergency response programs.
  • Direct and chair plant safety committee meetings. Maintain OSHA records. Document findings through inspection with the Union Safety Representative to ensure the operations comply with safety and health programs. Conduct accident prevention and education activities.
  • Respond to emergencies. Recommend methods of addressing health, safety, and environmental concerns. Manage environmental emergencies.
  • Review all proposed new or modified processes and equipment to ensure all safety, health, and environmental rules, regulations, and policies are followed.
  • Ensure the evaluation and update of safety and emergency preparedness plans.
  • Prepare budgets. Recommend and prepare proposals for capital and operational expenditures for safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental projects as required.
  • Accompany corporate, contractors, and governmental agency personnel during facility-wide inspections. Prepare summaries and recommend actions accordingly.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of regulatory compliance and keep abreast of changing business practices that may impact health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Manage the contractor security guard services in addition to all facility security activities.
  • Complete special assignments as requested.
  • Comply with Good Manufacturing Practices. Maintain all required records and be familiar with the principles of the Food Safety Program. Inform the General Manager of any issues and understand the importance of product safety, legality, and quality.
  • Is the Management Representative for ISO 140001 and is familiar with the Environmental Management System policy, procedures, or work instructions and understands the potential consequences of departure from the requirement. Will notify the General Manager of any observed or potential compliance issues or nonconformities

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and/or Environmental or Safety Studies.
  • Three to five years of manufacturing experience in environmental affairs.
  • Three to five years of industrial safety experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and team skills

Work Environment

This position requires knowledge and awareness of industrial sites and operations. Protective gear will be required where appropriate. The work environment consists of both an office and a production environment, which may involve exposure to varying temperatures, loud noises, and machinery. Addressing urgent production issues may require working outside regular business hours, including weekends and holidays. Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs. Ability to work in a hot, high-noise environment.
