The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Olympic Region as a State Lands Unit Coordinator. Were looking for an experienced forester to drive the implementation of our strategic harvest plan, coordinate cross-disciplinary teams, and manage all phases of the timber sale process. This position blends high-level project management with on-the-ground leadership, requiring strong collaboration with agency specialists and external partners. As the lead for your work unit, youll supervise staff, ensure environmental and legal compliance, and shape the sustainable future of our working forests. - Act as project manager in the implementation of the 5-year harvest plan
- Organize, monitor, and evaluate work of region and division staff
- Direct timber sales staff in general sale layout, road location, and HCP implementation
- Develop and foster collaborative relationships with diverse working partners
- Supervision of a work unit of 2 field foresters including planning work, setting performance standards, performing evaluations, and guiding training
You must meet all the Required Qualifications and Competencies to be considered for this position. There are multiple pathways to meet qualifications, such as education, volunteer work, life skills, and experience. - Bachelors degree in forestry, natural resources, or a closely related field;
OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. - Knowledge of principles and practices of the forestry profession as applied to the Northwestern United States (i.e., fundamentals of silviculture of Northwest species, sales layout, logging methods, engineering, reforestation and intensive forest practices).
- Experience and ability to correctly use topographic maps, aerial photos, compass, clinometer, radio, laser rangefinder, and GPS equipment.
- Proficient computer skills such as MS word, MS Excel, and ARC-GIS, with aptitude for learning new software as needed.
- Experience with timber sale layout.
- Experience with contract compliance.
- Experience implementing current forest management plans, Forest Practice rules, the Habitat Conservation Plan, Policy for Sustainable Forests and other policies, procedures, and statutes applicable to natural resource management.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills as demonstrated by the ability to resolve conflicts, write effectively, and communicate with diverse groups both internal and external.
- Ability to think critically, analyze, and make decisions in a dynamic and sometimes stressful environment, and work both independently and as part of a team to reach agency and region goals.

- Office and Field work setting (forestry setting often on steep/uneven terrain and in inclement weather).
- A commute will be required to reach most job sites and trainings. The use of an assigned vehicle will be the primary mode of travel. However, the use of specialty vehicles and pool vehicles will be used when specific tasks or efficiency dictates
- A current, valid drivers license and two years of driving experience. Additionally, DNR requires state drivers to possess a license that is not suspended, revoked, or restricted (for example, Occupational/Restricted Driver Licenses or requiring ignition interlock devices). This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
These qualifications are not required. However, it can help you stand out as a candidate and should be highlighted in your application material.
- Four years of professional forestry field experience involving the design and layout of timber sales, forest roads, administration of timber sale contracts; or professional cruising.
- One year of supervisory experience.
