FIELD/FOREST WORKERS / ASSISTANT FOREST MANAGER
We have immediate openings for forestry workers. This position is located on Oahu in our forests at Gunstock Ranch, Laie and in Haleiwa.
Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative is a NON-PROFIT reforestation organization. We are not a commercial landscape company. Our mission is to revitalize Hawaiis bio-diverse native/endemic eco-system by reforesting our aina one acre at a time. To date, we have planted over 600,000 native & endemic trees and removed invasive species. Our goal is survival rate, NOT just to plant tree today.
Looking for a dependable, honest, hard-working team member willing to bust their butt daily with little complaint. Must be highly motivated, adaptable to a wide variety of changing work tasks, possess an eagerness to learn, able to work under a variety of environmental conditions (especially heat). Most days are a physically demanding. Must be a positive, passionate, motivated, self-directed individual able to work well with fellow staff, communicate respectfully, take pride in their work and take care of equipment as if it were their own.
RESPONSIBILITIES
seed collection, propagule banking, propagation of native and endemic plant species, greenhouse nursery care and maintenance, out-planting, data collection, managing a bio-diverse native/endemic forest, non-native invasive species control, identify tree insects and diseases, fence construction and maintenance, forest fire mitigation and response, conduct prescribed burns, assist with community group plantings, watering, land clearing, general agriculture/forestry work and general project implementation. You will be led by an incredible forest manager/botanist who works hands-on and supportive team members.
Not going to lie. The work is hard! Its hot! We love, appreciate, and value our team members but you wont get a daily trophy or reward for just showing up and doing your job.
You arent maintaining a garden at someone else's house, or picking pineapple for others to eat. Youll be helping to build a legacy for Hawaii, for the next generation helping to plant native/endemic Hawaiian trees, removing invasives, and managing a bio-diverse native/endemic forest!
QUALIFICATIONS
This is a full-time position
INTEGRITY
Must be willing to learn
Must be familiar with grounds-keeping tools: weed whackers, shovel, auger, ride-on mower. Knowledge of basic equipment maintenance
Ability to commute to Laie and Haleiwa
Valid Drivers license
Knowledge of all proper safety equipment and tools.
Basic carpentry and mechanical knowledge a plus.
Knowledge of irrigation systems a plus
Ability to operate heavy equipment a plus.
Basic knowledge and use of technology (access to a smart phone, email)
Able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
COMPENSATION
Starting pay $18.50 per hour for 90-day probationary period, then a minimum of $20.50 per hour based on performance and merit. This probationary period may be shorter if performance exceeds expectations; however, it is not guaranteed for promotion if expectations to fulfill the position are not met.
