The mission of the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) is to improve the quality of life for all Kentuckians by protecting our land, air, and water resources by utilizing our natural resources in an environmentally conscientious manner. By joining the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves as an Environmental Scientist Advisor in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to serve as the agency's lead terrestrial vertebrate biologist, supporting biological assessments, surveys, and species monitoring.

Holders of the Environmental Scientist Advisor position will complete tasks such as:

  • Lead field-based oversight of Heritage Land Conservation Fund (HLCF) and Wild Rivers properties to ensure compliance with management plans, state regulations, and agency policies.
  • Provide technical assistance to land acquisition partners and applicants in the development of proposals and long-term management plans for HLCF funding.
  • Conduct terrestrial vertebrate surveys using methods such as acoustic bat monitoring, mist netting for bats, and biological assessments; analyze and manage collected data.
  • Coordinate and participate in public meetings and stakeholder engagements to promote the goals of HLCF, Wild Rivers, and the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves.
  • Train and support agency staff in land management practices, field data collection, and regulatory compliance related to protected natural areas.

Holders of this job will learn the following skills:

  • Expertise in land conservation and regulatory compliance, ensuring proper management of protected lands under the HLCF and Wild Rivers programs.
  • Advanced field biology skills, including survey design, data collection, and species monitoring, with a focus on acoustic, netting, and cave surveys for bats.
  • Strong technical and analytical abilities for evaluating land management plans, interpreting environmental regulations, and managing ecological data.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills for collaborating with partners, engaging stakeholders, and training agency staff in conservation practices.

Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, natural resources management, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • At least 5 years of experience in natural resource management, conservation planning, or related field.
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to conservation and natural resource management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and database management.

Additional Information:

  • Position will require frequent travel; some overnight trips should be expected.
  • Position will require standing, stooping, bending and lifting.
  • Position will require sitting at a desk.
  • Position will require annual physical fitness test. Employee will need to carry 25 pounds for 2 miles in under 30 minutes.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Five years of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in a natural, biological, or physical science will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering, or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis. An incumbent in the position may be subject to adverse weather conditions, exposure to snakes and insects, water-borne pathogens, broken glass, rusty metal in streams, and hazards common to operation of electro-fishing equipment, which requires the following of safety procedures.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
