Job Duties

What We Need YOU To Do:

We need a motivated team player to join the Division of Materials and Waste Management (DMWM) at our Central Office in Columbus, Ohio.

1) Will require statewide travel and unusual working hours. In addition to office work, will require working outside in varying weather conditions. Will require walking long distances in difficult terrain.

2) Must obtain registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist-in-Training or Registered Environmental Health Specialist in accordance with Section 3776.11 of the Ohio Revised Code from the Ohio Department of Health within six months of the initial date of employment. Failure to attain registration may result in dismissal.

In this role you'll assist with remediation programs that address abandoned landfills, open dumping sites, and illegal scrap tire disposal throughout Ohio. We'll need your eye for details to review applications for remediation projects and monitor contractors performing approved projects to ensure they operate correctly and are compliant with state and federal rules.

You'll track project progress, resolve performance and contract matters, process invoices for payment, and maintain financial assurance data and documents such as insurance policies, letters of credit, trust agreements, and bonds.

You'll provide outreach to scrap tire-generating businesses and conduct inspections to evaluate compliance with state regulations. Where enforcement is necessary, you'll coordinate actions and assist district office staff with case preparation, drafting, and management.

We'll count on your excellent customer service skills to assist agency staff, industry, consultants, and health departments with technical and financial matters for remediation projects. You'll also speak about our remediation and scrap tire programs at technical and educational meetings, conferences, and seminars.

Monitor contractor performance at scrap tire and waste debris remediation projects.

Review applications for remediation programs.

Assist in coordinating enforcement actions when necessary.

Review, track, and maintain project data and financial assurance documents.

Provide technical assistance and training to industry, partners, and interested parties.

Qualifications

12 mos. exp. as Environmental Specialist 1, 85861.

OR 4 yrs. trg. or 4 yrs. exp. in position involving engineering or chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, geology or hydrogeology &/or other comparable physical or health science field &/or mathematics which included responsibility for conducting compliance monitoring surveys &/or inspections/reviews or investigations, or review of permit applications relative to oil & gas well operations or injection, annular disposal & saltwater injection wells & enhanced recovery projects or coal mining, or solid/hazardous waste sites or industrial & municipal wastewater dischargers, or collecting, compiling & preparing various environmental assessments, evaluations, reports & related documents. Training & experience must be commensurate with duties to be assigned.

OR baccalaureate degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, earth science &/or urban & regional planning, geology or other comparable physical or health science fields, with training to be commensurate with duties to be assigned.
