Industrial Hygienist Jobs in Washington
An Industrial Hygienist is a professional responsible for identifying, evaluating, and controlling risks that could affect the health and safety of people in the workplace. They apply scientific principles to anticipate, recognize, and control environmental factors or stresses arising in or from the workplace, which may cause sickness, impair health and wellbeing, or cause significant discomfort among workers or citizens in the community. They are extensively involved in the environmental industry, focusing on preventing hazards in the environment that could impact public health.
To be effective in this role, an Industrial Hygienist must have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities. They should also have a broad knowledge of engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Important certifications include the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credentials, which demonstrate competency in the field. Prior to becoming an Industrial Hygienist, a person may have roles such as a Safety Specialist, Environmental Scientist, or Occupational Health and Safety Technician.
